Christmas in Puerto Vallarta, or Tamales & Pinatas, is very relaxing. Everyone is happy to be with family or friends and there are no Martha Stewart expectations. The traditional Mexican customs are very different from the US & Canada. They actually refer to December 24th as Christmas and the celebration begins that night, usually with midnight or at least a very late mass, then back to the house to open gifts then a dinner at about 3am and finally to sleep about dawn. So December 25th tends to be a very quiet day. Although as a popular tourist destination with visitors from all over the world, Puerto Vallarta does not close down on December 25th and you can enjoy dinner at any of the restaurants, from funky and fun to gourmet level. Just make sure to make reservations if you want to have dinner at one of the popular gourmet restaurants. My favorite is Trio, although Hacienda San Angel, the new version La Iguana, La Palapa and Daquiri Dicks are all very popular. La Palapa and Daquiri Dicks are both beachfront so watch the sunset enjoy the open air setting. La Palapa is actually under a huge palapa or thatched hut.
The traditional dinner for Mexicans is Tamales. Tamales were an acquired taste for me, but now I really appreciate them. They are a meat mixture packed in Corn Masa (dough) wrapped in Corn Husks and steamed. Served with a Green salsa usually.
The other tradition is a Pinata, always popular is the classic star, but also Burros, and everything from Spongebob square pants to Pinata Christmas Trees. My Mexican friends laugh at me because I hate to smash them, they are so pretty.
