Day of the Dead Puerto Vallarta

Of all the Festivals in Mexico Dia de los Muertos is one of my favorites. The concept of remembering and visiting loved ones who are no longer with us is a wonderful tradition. Of course there is something about all the Day of the Dead art that I appreciate, the bright colors, usually a very bright pink, orange and purple. The popular flower is the Marigold and who does not love the very elegant Catarina the elegantly ladylike skeleton.
The most popular traditions of Day of the Dead are creating altars to honor the dead, including special offerings, you might see the favorite drink or even junk food. As well everyone talks about the deceased, sharing memories and the gravesites are cleaned and decorated. Because Day of the Dead is a very festive, creative holiday, current Day of the Dead customs also include festivals, parades, and the making of Dia de los Muertos crafts.
The key focus behind these Day of the Dead customs is to make contact with the spirits of the dead, to let them know that they are not forgotten and that their loved ones on earth still care about them. It is a way of keeping the connection between loved ones alive, though they may be physically separated by death.
Day of the Dead traditions can vary from town to town, with each community embracing their own unique blend of rituals, customs, and celebrations. Amazingly Day of the Dead customs are becoming more common in the US and Canada wherever the latin culture is strong.
The most important tradition is the Dia de los Muertos altar traditionally, people build altars in their homes during the weeks leading up to November 1st, as a way to celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed to the other side. However the alters are also becoming very common in public areas. There may be competitions to build the most impressive alter, usually for a public figure, celebrity or even a concept.
