Pathfinders pics: On the wine trail in Mendoza, Argentina

Lonely Planet Pathfinder Macca Sherifi recently toured the wine trail in Mendoza, Argentina. Here he shares the highlight of his trip – cheers!

‘Nestled in the foothills of the Andes and close to the Chilean border is Mendoza, a place that’s carving out a name for itself as a world class destination for one thing – the wine.

In Mendoza, wine is like life’s blood, giving the pulse, the rhythm to the city, and you really can’t come here without taking a few tours of the wineries in the surrounding area. And the one wine on everyone’s lips is the Malbec, a deep fruity red that’s made Mendoza famous.

Recently, I hit the wine trail to discover what makes this particular part of the world so good at producing it, and as they say, the best way to learn all about wine is at source with a glass in one hand and a bottle of the table. And that’s exactly what I did!’

A long and wine-ding road

‘One of the reasons Mendoza is so good at producing wine is the climate here. With hot temperatures during the day, cold temperatures during the night, and a very low amount of rainfall, these are the perfect conditions for growing grapes.’

A Green Divider

‘With its rolling vineyards set in the foothills of the Andes, the Mendoza wine region is home to more than 1,500 wineries. Each one is completely different, and often it’s worth visiting them for the views just as much as for the wine.’

Wine with a view

‘Usually you’ll get to try three or four different wines at a winery, and you can have lunch at a number of them too. No matter which winery you choose for a tasting session, the views are simply spectacular.’

The perfect place to play

‘Each winery is so unique with some having their own art galleries, games rooms, secret vaults of expensive bottles, and some even holding their own concerts and recitals. It certainly isn’t just about the wine here, but about the whole experience.’

Plan your time wisely

‘Argentina, like a lot of countries in South America, is extremely large and therefore time consuming to get around, so make sure you do some serious planning on the things to see and do before you go. If there’s one thing for certain though, you can’t visit Argentina without drinking some wine accompanied by an Argentinian ‘asado’ (BBQ) of course!’
