Southeastern Europe’s sites shortlisted for ‘7 Most Endangered’
Europa Nostra, which focuses on the protection of European cultural heritage, has shortlisted 11 sites for its 2014 ‘7 Most Endangered’ programme. The final list will be announced on 5 May in Vienna. Among the 11 endangered sites are five from southeastern Europe: Kastoria’s historic quarters (Greece), ancient Thracian sanctuary (Bulgaria), Roman archaeological site (Macedonia), Transylvania’s wooden churches (Romania) and Subotica’s Art Nouveau synagogue (Serbia). Lost battlefield found in Hampshire holiday camp
A WW1 mock battlefield has been uncovered in Hampshire, in the south of England. The field in Gosport contains zig-zagging trenches as well as the enemy front line. Soldiers were trained and strategies formulated for trench warfare on the site. This year is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WW1, which is being marked by events across Europe. French Alps skiing tragedies
Three people died on Thursday in separate incidents while skiing in the French Alps. One involved a crash where a skier struck a young boy at high speed, killing him. A 23-year-old woman fell 100m to her death while snowboarding in an off-piste area, while a 51-year old man died in an avalanche. A reminder for all skiers to take care. Read more: thelocal.fr

Design your own suite at The Ice Hotel
The Ice Hotel in Sweden is offering guests the chance to design their own suites for winter 2014. With prices starting at SEK 1,485,000 (£138,720) the service doesn’t come cheap, but a proportion of the cost will be donated to environmental projects in The Baltic Sea. Read more: huffingtonpost.ca

Spain discusses beach development
Draft regulations currently under discussion in Spain grant permission for further development of chiringuitos (beach bars) on the coast. In particular urban chiringuitos will be allowed to take up 300 sq metres, an increase from 150 sq metres currently. The controversial proposals would also allow building to take place on some sand dunes, opening up previously protected areas of the coast to development. Read more: elpais.com
