Pompeii film expected to boost tourism
Tourism officials in southern Italy are hoping that a new feature film about Pompeii will boost the number of tourists visiting the Pompeii archaeological site, particularly Americans. The film is set in 79 AD and tells the story of the eruption of Mt Vesuvius that buried the ancient city. But the film has some historical inaccuracies and early reviews have not been positive. Ryanair to double fleet in next 15 years
Budget Irish airline Ryanair has announced that it will nearly double its fleet to 600 aircraft, carrying 150 million passengers a year, by 2030. The company, whose model is based on a no-frills service with additional fees for such cxtras as baggage, flies to European destinations and Morocco, and plans to expand to Israel, Turkey and Russia. Athens to host the ‘travel Oscars’ in August
Athens will host the Europe Gala Ceremony of the World Travel Awards (WTA) on 2 August 2014. The event is known as the ‘travel industry Oscars’ and this is the first time it is being held in Greece. The ceremony will take place at the beach resort of Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso. Over the weekend a ‘journey through Greece’ itinerary for guests will showcase the country’s history and culture. Rouble falls against dollar & hits all-time low against euro
On 19 February the Russian rouble hit an all-time low against the euro and was the weakest against the US dollar since 2009. This follows the violent protests in Ukraine and the Russian finance ministry’s announcement that it plans to buy US$6 billion in foreign currency. Read more: themoscowtimes.com

Amsterdam to get more bicycle parking spaces & bike lanes
Amsterdam will get an additional 40,000 bicycle parking spaces and 15km of new bike lanes, thanks to new measures that will complement the existing Long-Term Cycle Plan. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion and parking issues for Amsterdammers who, collectively, cycle around 2 million km every day. Read more: dutchdailynews.com
