Blue Flag certification for local Puerto Vallarta beaches is on the works with local Puerto Vallarta City Government. If you are not familiar the Blue Flag status indicates the Beaches are certified by a global standard to cover the below criteria:
- Clean water (quality testing)
- Safe with police presence
- Manned lifeguard tower
- Public bathrooms
- Well maintained public access
- Trash containers & regular collection
Several local beaches (Playa Palmares, Playa Camarones and Playa de Oro not only meet this criteria, but have been certified the globally recognized Blue Flag status. Now 3 more beaches Amapas & both of the Conchas Chinas Beaches are almost ready but waiting as the certification process is unfortunately costly approx $8200 USD / beach and time consuming as the group must send a special person to confirm the status and they are busy people so getting an appointment for status confirmation may take time.
May 17th 2017 a group of from Puerto Vallarta’s City government & a group of property owners or their representatves met at Villa Verano to consider strategies to raise funds to cover the cost of the certification process to become Global Blue Flag certified. The City hall group were Ecology, Beach and like departments. They have done their part of the work, cleaning up beaches, testing water quality and dealing with the city groups to improve public access or install lifeguard towers and public washrooms. The private parties involved are reaching out to encourage locals who care about the town and beaches to consider a donation. The good news for business people is that the donation is tax deductible, always an attractive detail.
The Global Blue Flag Status is a voluntary eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas in 48 countries, the Blue Flag works towards sustainable development of beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management, and Safety & Other Services.
