It seems tourism is down in the United States. What a surprise! On the other hand, tourism is UP in Mexico and that includes Puerto Vallarta. The peso is at a great rate for travelers and even with a slight uptick in local prices, it’s still an incredible bargain. People once asked if it was safe to come to Mexico and now they are arriving in droves. Airlines seem to be aware of this, too, as airfares have been astonishingly low. With increase in tourist activity, we sometimes see an increase in crime but recent stories dispel this theory. As a matter of fact, it seems that people who work and live in Puerto Vallarta are making Americans feel more welcome than ever.
Phones, wallets and backpacks left in taxis being returned to their owners; shopkeepers running down the street pursuing customers with leftover change. This is great news for Puerto Vallarta but we maintain it’s wise to err on the side of caution. Why put yourself through the anxiety? We have some simple suggestions:
When traveling by taxi, always hold your belongings in your lap. This goes for any city in the world, whether in a taxi, bus, canoe or rickshaw. In Puerto Vallarta, ask the driver how much the fare will be before you enter the taxi. Once you are seated and comfortable, get that amount from your wallet/purse and hold in your hand, tip included. Be aware of what you take out of your bag or backpack and concentrate on making sure it gets back in, zipped up and secured before you arrive at your destination. We make a habit of not getting too chit-chatty with our driver; not because we are unfriendly but we have found this can be a major distraction. You have touristy questions? Get your stuff together and then have your visit. We also recommend, when traveling alone, sitting in the back seat. You have the entire area to yourself and it’s easier to do a sweep when you disembark.
When you’re ready to exit the taxi, don’t hop out and close the door. Turn around, and scope out the seat and the floor. Don’t close the door until you have made sure you’ve left nothing behind. Years ago, we left a wallet in a taxi in Puerto Vallarta, and it took the driver until the next day to track us down. We got it back because he found our Blockbuster card, of all things, and they helped him locate us. Make sure to have your cell phone number and local accommodation information tucked all belongings.
Que cómo es es.
