Getting Acclimated in Puerto Vallarta
Everyone expects the temperature to cool down by November and we often hear complaints about the heat from returning snowbirds. The season is picking up, arrivals are aplenty and there just aren’t enough fans to go around. What to do? Especially when one has a turkey to roast and napkins in need of clever and stylish folding. In an effort to ready the casa for a grand party and catching up with folks we haven’t seen since April or May, we risk the possibility of melting into a steaming puddle.
Avoid polyester; it sticks to you and doesn’t allow your skin to breath. Of course you want to get all dressed up for the start of the holiday season but you can do so with cotton. Many local shops supply beautiful authentic fashions for both men and women. Huipil, the embroidered clothing from Chaipas, Oaxaca and other Mexican states, is available in all sizes, children included. A loose fit will be the most comfortable and cotton/linen fabrics are a much better choice for staying cool and the look is festive and unique.
Drinks loads of water. The body needs to refresh after all that sweating, and dehydration can be perilous, regardless of age. Make sure you don’t try to replace your fluids with beer; that will only dehydrate you more and make you feel rotten the next day, when you need all your energy reserves. Alcohol increases blood flow to the skin, which causes one to look and feel flushed. This type of perspiration isn’t healthy. Alcohol also reduces blood flow to the muscles, which is what cause what we refer to as a hangover, a condition that remains until all the ingested wine, beer or tequila is completely eliminated from the body. We’re not saying don’t drink at all, just be moderate and consider how the combined heat and beverages effect a person.
Cool showers will be your best friend in the midday heat, as well as dips in the pool. Stay out of the sun; a sunburn, even slightly, will cause so much more discomfort in the heat. The siesta isn’t just a time to catch up on your sleep. It’s best taken during the time of day when the heat is most bothersome; less movement equals less sweating and a chiller feeling all way around. Cool cloths and compress around the neck are not only a great way to stay fresh, there can make a style statement, too.
Que es cómo es.
