Puerto Vallarta – January Is Perfection

January is a Perfect Time in Puerto Vallarta
January has its upside and down in Puerto Vallarta. The weather is perfect with highs in the low to mid 80’s (mid to high 20’s C) and nights cooling off to the low 60’s (mid-teens C). There is a very small chance of rain, and if there is any precipitation, it won’t last long. Besides, it’s warm, and it’s not white. These are priorities for those seeking warmth from the northern winter. Other than that, there are a lot of people.
The evenings are balmy and comfortable. Once the sun goes down, especially if there is a breeze; you’re dining at the beach; or taking a stroll along the Malecón, a sweater or light jacket is advised. You’ve probably spent the day in the sun, and your back and arms will need the comfort of an extra layer.
Remember, in Puerto Vallarta, you’re rather close to the equator, and the sun is HOT, so be prepared. Exposure that hasn’t seen daylight in months (same cases, years) requires serious protection. Sunblock is one solution but don’t forget to reapply when you get out of the pool or ocean. We recommend long sleeve shirts and wide brim hats. The type of contact with heat you will experience needs to be done in moderation. Pareos (sarongs) are sold on the beach in Puerto Vallarta by vendors for an excellent price, as low priced as US $5. They provide perfect protection and are a great souvenir.
You’re likely to see a lot of skin at the beach. Some people think it is okay to show off just about everything they have and we have learned to turn our heads. Your mate may tell you that you’re beautiful in your itsy bitsy bikini, or your tiny Speedo and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but please cover up once you are beyond sight of sand and sea. Consider you are in a Catholic country where older women don’t reveal their arms and legs in public. (This is why you see many Mexicans swimming in the river or at the seashore completely clothed.)
If you’re headed to the jungle or mountains; hiking, biking, doing the ziplines, or Botanical Gardens, be sure to apply bug repellent. Our favorite brand is Autan, which is sold in all the local pharmacies. Spray or lotion.
Layering is the answer for traveling to Puerto Vallarta in January. The mornings and evenings are cool and the days can get blistering hot for those not accustomed to the tropics.
Que es cómo es.
