University of Guadalajara CUCOSTA
University Center of the Coast is the official name of the University of Guadalajara branch in Puerto Vallarta. CUCOSTA is part of an educational network in the State of Jalisco that is the second significant school of higher learning in the country, following the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The University of Guadalajara is classified as the seventeenth oldest in all of North America and has been recognized for a considerable amount of time. The university has established itself as a world leader in education.
CUCOSTA is comprised of three Divisions: Engineering; Social and Economic Studies; and Biological and Health Studies; and ten Departments: Exact Sciences, Information Sciences and Technologies, Arts, Education and Humanities, International Studies and Foreign Languages, Law Studies, Socio-Economic Studies, Administrative and Accounting Studies, Psychology, and Medical and Biological Sciences.
The Puerto Vallarta campus is one of the most favored and serves several municipalities, from Cabo Corrientes to Tomatlán, offering an array of Associate, Bachelor, Masters and PH.D. programs. The research centers include a Center for Specialized Family Studies, which focuses on the challenges of families today in the modern world. Research in family structure and evolution are the focus of this popular curriculum. The extremely well attended Center for Studies on Sustainable Tourism Development (CEDESTUR) is reflected in the reputation of the surrounding area in Puerto Vallarta where many students launch lifelong careers in our internationally known resorts.
The requirements are high but transfers are encouraged from schools around the globe, including such venerated establishments as UCLA. A complete grasp of Spanish is required and an essay in the language is a component of the requisites.
The population of the University lends a boost to the economy, with an annual attendance of approximately 5000 students, plus the employment of over four hundred teachers, a quarter of whom are full time educators, with 37 full time research professors. The University is also very proud of their library, which contains over 32,000 titles and more than 60,000 volumes. They also provide nearly 2000 computers for all courses.
Puerto Vallarta is also home to lesser known schools such as UNIVA and the Technological Institute, which are well attended, some including an agenda for high school level education. Public and private schools for basic education are divided in three levels; primary 1-6; junior high school (secundaria) 7-9; and high school (preparatoria) 10-12. Puerto Vallarta has long taken pride in the provision and maintenance of education of students of all ages. Uniforms and colors designate each school and high standards are kept for all phases.
