Puerto Vallarta, Isla de los Ninos In the middle of Downtown Puerto Vallarta, a River cuts the Downtown área in 2 parts, much like the River Seine running thru Paris, France, creating the Right and Left Bank. The difference in Puerto Vallarta is that there is an amazing island in the middle of the River. It probably began as a sand bank, but now has immense giant trees. I have heard that years ago there was an amazing range of birds even Pink Flamingos (I am told). There are still beautiful white Egrets (called Garzas in Spanish) short of like a small version of a Stork, when the River is high the Pelicans come in from the ocean. As well there are many very large Iguanas – which can be seen in the large branches of the trees near the River Café.
The Isla Rio (River) Cuale is a marvelous green space in the middle of the town. The space is a shady oasis where you cannot hear the traffic, sit on a bench and people watch, or read. The Isla was designated Isla de los Ninos translation “ Island of the Children” about 30 years ago a wonderful plan was made and the Isla was dedicated to children, with green space, a cultural center for music, arts and theater. . Local painter Manuel Lepe’s paintings captured this image so well. Recently a program to refresh the island has been organized by the Ecology department of the city hall. Volunteers are invited to come and help Saturday November 14 & 21. The plans are for cleaning up and natural debris, planting flowers and painting buildings. There is a hoped for plan to build a Sanctuary for the Green Iguanas. Local businesses are donating staff and supplies – the Las Palmas Hotel has sent over 100 sandwiches each weekend, plus water, sodas, fresh fruit and more – they have sent hope.
Other businesses are offering hand painted ceramic signs to show what each tree or flower is.
