Puerto Vallarta: You Can Learn from Mexican Soap Operas

Since moving to Puerto Vallarta, we don’t have a lot of time for television but when we do….
Telenovelas reflect a lot of what is going on in Mexican society on a daily basis. You want to know what it’s like to live in a cartel family? Be terrified of them? Work for them? Get killed by them? Watch El Señor De Los Cielos (Lord of the Skies) based on the life of Amado Carrillo Fuentes, a famous drug lord. Fuentes died at the age of forty, while undergoing massive facial reconstruction to change his appearance in an effort to avoid US and Mexican authorities. He is considered one of the wealthiest criminals in history and his story is told, somewhat fictionalized, in El Señor De Los Cielos. The success of this show reveals a lot about what captivates viewers. Every season the protagonist meets new challenges and continues to fight for survival. Whether the show will end as Carrillo Fuentes’ real life did remains to be seen. We have learned much watching this show; fantasy or reality doesn’t affect our learning curve.
Dueños del paraíso (Masters of Paradise) Anastasia Cardona is a woman who has risen to power and spends every living moment plotting how to torment those who come in touch with her.
Amores con Trampa (Love Traps) centers around a family who moves from the country to the big city in search of success and a better life. A frequent guest and co-star is the very popular Joan Sebastian, a famous Mexican performer, making this show a hit with not just drama queens but music buffs, as well.
We have found that following these shows, and others, such as Quiero Odiarte Pero Te Amo (I Hate You but I Love You), which is based on another telenovela La Mentira (The Lie) and Qué te Perdone, Dios (May God Forgive You) is educational in many ways and so far, our best Spanish teacher. The cast speaks clearly and with distinct pronunciations. Turn on the subtitles in English and follow along. You will quickly learn the language in the same manner many non-English speakers learn to get along in the USA and Canada, thought they may have a skewed view of life in those countries, as you will also, of Mexico. These shows are accessible in most countries and through internet viewing.
No mi digas! Que es cómo es.
