Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Sol Beer is one of my Favorites in Mexico but I also like Corona and Pacifico. Sol is a light colored and flavored beer perfect for hot weather, add a squeeze of fresh lime or not. I have always loved the logo, Sol translates as “Sun” and coming from the Pacific Northwest of Canada Sun is considered gold, a rare and much valued commodity. In my pursuit of knowledge I thought I would check the internet and you have to see the Sol Beer website. Whoever writes for them has a sense of humor, there is a section under “About us” that rewrites the history of Mexico as the history of So Beer. It starts “1870’s 300 years of oppression 300 years of thick Colonial beer. What a nightmare. Until in 1810 a Mexican, maverick priest: Father Hidalgo put together a rag tag army and ignited the fire of revolution. Independence. Independence meant they were finally free to brew their own beer. 1899Fresh, light, this one was different. As if a message from deceased Father Hidalgo, a beam of light pierced through a hole in the brewery’s roof, illuminating it’s golden colour. They named it* “El Sol”. I learned more about Mexican history in a short Beer commercial then in all the time I spent studying it. I prefer the light beers, but Mexico also produces some great dark beers, they actually make a special dark Beer that is only sold at Christmas time called Noche Buena which translates as “Good Night” but also is the name for Poinsettia and there is a red Poinsettia on the label and is a thick Vienna style Lager.
