Puerto Vallarta , Mexico. Most people in the United States & Canada have either had a Margarita Experience or heard of one from a friend. If you have only had the typical north of the Rio Grande Margarita you have not truly experienced a Margarita. North of the Rio Grande they are a prepackaged watered down version. Unless you have a great bartender who appreciates that a “True” Margarita can only be made with freshly squeezed Lime Juice and a “Good” quality Tequila, note “Good” not high end of top label.
My personal favorite is Cuervo Especial, a smooth yet not too pricey Tequila, that does not have any smoky overtures from being aged in burned casks. One of my favorite Margarita stories is going to a beachfront bar with friends and I order a Margarita made with Cuervo Especial. The Bartender thinking he was talking to a neophyte drinker of Margaritas , went to great lengths to convince me to change to a very high end Tequila call Don Julio. I politely but firmly told him I preferred Cuervo Especial, but he was relentless. Finally getting tired of the discussion and mostly tired of waiting to get my Margarita, I sized up the Bartender and advised him “I have been drinking Margaritas longer then you have been alive, please give me a Margarita with Cuervo Especial!” By the way in case you are wondering he was about 18 years old. My secondary advise is “A wise man does not stand between a girl and her chocolate or cocktail”
There are many versions of the recipe for the classic Margarita, my personal favorite is with a shot of freshly squeezed orange juice. No salt, sorry purists who feel it is not a Margarita without salt. See below recipe
- 1 ½ oz Cuervo Especial
- ½ oz. Cointreau
- 1 oz freshly squeezed Lime Juice
- 1 oz freshly squeezed Orange juice
- Shake with ice and pour into an old Fashioned glass full of ice.
The difference between a Margarita and other cocktails is the Tequila, Tequila has a wonderful ability to wake you up and calm you down, and cheer you up. If you have ever had to attend a social function and are shale we say “a bit tired” the best pick me up in the world is Tequila, either a shot or enjoy a Margarita and get some vitamin C at the same time. After one Margarita I find I am able to enjoy almost any social function.
