Vine adventures: on safari in Botswana

There’s magic in the moving image – even in the most fleeting examples of it. That’s why we’re big fans of the six-second looping video platform, Vine. We love seeing and sharing the six-second creations from travel enthusiasts on the channel.

To help surface some of the best of them, we’re kicking off a regular series of Vine-led posts from our Lonely Planet Pathfinders. We’re also keen to see your Vines from the road, so use #lonelyplanet for the chance of a revine on our official feed.

For our first post in this series, Lonely Planet’s Social Communications Manager, Seb Neylan, gives us a glimpse of Botswana – the top country from our Best in Travel list, and a place that depicts wild Africa at its very best.

‘At the start of the day at Chobe National Park I was told that the prospect of seeing a lion was a bit of a long shot. Later that morning, as we were leaving the park in another direction, our driver got a tip from another of the safari guides to turn around. Next thing we knew, we were a few metres away from a lion feeding on a baby elephant, with three females lionesses panting behind him from the kill.

‘These natural giants are otherworldly, like upside-down trees with their roots in the air. Some are hundreds of years old and their bark feels as hard as rock.

‘There’s a playfulness to elephants as they drink, as they flop their trunks and spray water all over the place. Though their strength and size is at first intimidating, seeing their eyes and gestures up close, you quickly realise there’s a true gentleness within them. When it comes to viewing these beautiful creatures, Botswana is unmatched.

‘The sounds and the smiles. That’s what I remember at this performance in Maun. The dancers’ howls, cries and shouts were so full of energy. After the performance we went into the hut where they showed us how to weave traditional Batswana baskets. The photographer couldn’t stop getting footage of their incredibly wide and photogenic smiles. I was glad to see these made the final cut of our Botswana Best in Travel video – it perfectly sums up the warmth of the local people.’
